Teachers Training to be Regulated under New Authority

An authority is being planned under the chief minister to revolutionise the school education in Punjab by regulating the certification, registration and licensing of teachers, their trainers, administrators and other personnel and the organisations concerned.
"The aim of the proposed Punjab Education Standards and Development Authority is to improve the school education as per international standards every-where in the province" said a senior official on Thursday.
According to him, the authority will work for ensuring quality pre-and in-service teacher training, selection and recruitment of teachers, trainers and education administrators. It will develop standards of their professional practice and selection, and their preparation for promotion at all career levels.
It will arrange for monitoring and coaching of teachers, teacher trainers and education administrators, and redressal of issues of their capability and conduct. It will make them obtain certification and accreditation, also having powers to revoke certifications and licences.
Its function will include licensing of teachers, teacher trainers and education administrators, quality assurance and monitoring of the education system, formulating and revising regulations and advisory guidance including provincial standards for them.
Other functions include making regulations for the award of its professional statues and accreditation, provincial rolls of licensed teachers, teacher trainers an d education administrators, guidance on the pre and in-service training.
It will make or secure provision of training in management and leadership for principals, head-teachers, individuals aspiring to those positions and other teachers with senior responsibilities.
For the purpose of benchmarking against global standards and for exchanging professional developments, it will enter into partnerships with national and international organisations dealing with teacher licensing.
The government may, with the concurrence of the authority, transfer the services of any of its employees to it. The authority may also, with the concurrence of an employee and the government, absorb the services of the employee into its service.
