Senior Research Assistant (GIS) - Karachi, Pakistan

Job Description

The Outreach and Research Programme of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health has nine community-based field sites across Pakistan (including five in Karachi) and focuses on research for the betterment of women and child health. The Department has a Nutritional Research Laboratory as well as an Infectious Disease Research Laboratory that caters to the needs of its research projects. It has well-acclaimed work to its credit both at the national and international level.
The Department is conducting an observational study in Gadap Town, Karachi to assess if environmental surveillance for enteric pathogens will complement clinical surveillance and will help inform targeted immunization and other control activities for the control of diarrheal and other diseases. The sampling of sewage is a non-invasive and anonymous approach for identification and response to enteric pathogens circulating in communities. It can be a useful tool for tracking emerging pathogens and monitoring the changing epidemiology of enteric infectious diseases.

Responsibilities:
You will be responsible to:
plan, produce, maintain and update a variety of maps, drawings and other graphic representations using layers and attribute data from GIS databases
set-up and publish maps to ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online and portal for ArcGIS
support and assist the team in different projects with GIS-specific tasks
support in deployment and user training
maintain and update system documentation and ensure procedures are timely and properly executed.

Requirements:
You should have:
a Masters degree preferrably in Computer Science, Geoinformatics or related discipline
good knowledge of ArcGIS Desktop applications and extensions
good knowledge of GIS systems, principles and concepts including GPS and ArcGIS Desktop
ability to manipulate a variety of datasets (such as Excel, Access, CSV) to extract, transform and load data into GIS database
competency in 3D modelling and visualization software such as Esri City Engine
experience of working with open-source GIS solutions across QGIS
ability to effectively work in teams as well as independently and meet stringent deadlines
willingness to travel nationally and internationally on need-basis.
This is a close-ended position to be based in Karachi.
