Job Description

The Outreach and Research Programme of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health has nine community-based field sites across Pakistan (including five in Karachi) and focuses on research for betterment of women and child health. The Department has a Nutritional Research Laboratory as well as an Infectious Disease Research Laboratory that cater to the needs of its research projects. It has well-acclaimed work to its credit both at the national and international level, not only impacting the health policies but also enabling millions to live an improved life. The Paediatrics Research laboratories are part of the WCH CoE. The laboratories currently support the Division of Women and Child Healths extensive Research Programme in infectious diseases, maternal-fetal medicine, and nutrition. Much of the laboratory research is translational, with laboratory investigations and Standardized Assays providing the backbone for community based epidemiological research and Clinical Trials, and increasing the WCH CoEs ability to compete successfully for extramural grants from leading agencies funding Global Health Programme. These are one of the main attractants for multiple projects as it can combine first rate epidemiological work with solid Research Laboratory Investigations and Basic Science work that is generally not possible elsewhere. Most of the Laboratory protocols followed for research in these laboratories are not the same, as those in high through-put clinical laboratories, as is also the case in research laboratories globally.

Responsibilities:
You will be responsible to:
serve as a technical expert in specific areas related to epidemiological study designs and resolve related technical problems
review lab test proposals of all new projects and ensure the availability of lab resources for the implementation of tests and new SOPs
ensure completeness, proper archiving of specimens, isolation, completion and keep track of CRFs and respond to related queries from the granting agencies
review all lab results, monitor internal and external quality control checks of all lab procedures and CRFs, and take preventive and corrective actions in case of non-conformities
actively work with the Lab Manager to maintain discipline among lab staff and ensure compliance to the organization as well as department-specific policies and procedures
prepare and present weekly and monthly project reports at the relevant forums.

Requirements:
You should have:
at least a Bachelors degree, preferably a Masters degree in Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Molecular biology, Microbiology, Genetics or equivalent
sound knowledge of Biosafety and Quality standards
at least 2 years of experience of working in a reputable laboratory, preferably in a Molecular Biology laboratory
sound knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices for research projects
ability to perform, optimize and troubleshoot advanced / NXT-Gen Molecular diagnostic tests without supervision
excellent interpersonal skills, particularly communication and people management skills
proficiency in the use of computers and MS Office applications
willingness for national and international travel on need-basis.
